Teacher Profile
Dr. Samuel Mok is a Hong Kongâborn classical guitarist and music educator whose work bridges virtuoso performance, early childhood pedagogy, and Christian spiritual formation. Trained extensively in Europe, he has developed a distinctive profile as both a concert artist and a specialist in childrenâs music learning, with a particular passion for integrating music into holistic education and family life.
Mok began his formal musical journey in Austria, long regarded as one of Europeâs historic centres of classical music. He earned an Artist Diploma with Distinction in guitar performance from the Prayner Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna, where he deepened his command of the classical guitar repertoire and refined his stagecraft. He went on to obtain a Bachelorâs degree in Guitar Performance from the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz, as well as an Honours Bachelorâs degree in Music from the Academy of Arts in BanskĂĄ Bystrica, Slovakia, broadening his exposure to Central European musical traditions and pedagogy. These years of intensive study laid the technical and artistic foundations for his later international career as a performer and teacher.
As a guitarist, Mok has appeared in lectures, masterclasses, workshops, and solo recitals across more than ten countries and regions, including France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Taiwan, Shanghai, India, and Thailand. His performances showcase a poetic and singing tone, combined with a disciplined approach to phrasing and colour shaped by his Central European training.Beyond the concert stage, he has served for many years in the Hong Kong guitar scene, including long-term association with the Hong Kong International Guitar Festival and Competition, where he has contributed as performer, educator and artistic leader. In parallel with his artistic work, he continues to pursue advanced study as a DMA candidate in music performance, further consolidating his expertise in guitar artistry and performance practice.
Alongside his performance career, Dr. Mok has built a distinguished profile as a music education scholar with a particular focus on young children. He holds two Doctorates in Education, both awarded with high distinction: one from the Universidad CatĂłlica San Antonio de Murcia in Spain and another from the University of Brittany in France. He also completed a Master of Arts in Music Education at The Education University of Hong Kong, deepening his grounding in curriculum design, educational psychology and classroom practice. His professional training spans a wide range of internationally recognised pedagogical approaches: he is an American Montessori Societyâaffiliated early childhood teacher, Orff Schulwerk certified from Level 1 to 4 through the Australian National Orff Schulwerk Association, and holds music education certifications from the KodĂĄly Institute in Australia (Levels 1 to 3). This mixture of European performance training and global pedagogical credentials informs his holistic approach to childrenâs music learning, in which active music-making, movement, creativity and careful scaffolding of skills play central roles.
In his day-to-day work as an educator, Mok is deeply involved in designing and delivering innovative programmes for young learners and families. He is the director of S.D.G. Music Academy, where he oversees curriculum development and teacher training, and offers specialised individual instruction.Among his signature initiatives is the âMastermind Musicâ and âMastermind Guitarâ programme, which blends Montessori philosophy with elements of Orff and KodĂĄly to create child-centred courses that nurture musicality, focus and imagination from the earliest stages. He also leads creative parentâchild workshops such as the âGuitar PLAYshop,â which weave together classical pieces, childrenâs songs and storytelling to introduce music as play to families with young children. Over the years, Mok has designed original music teaching materials and tools for children, and has been invited to write columns on music education for various media platforms in Hong Kong.
Mokâs commitment to the formation of the âwhole childâ extends beyond technique and musicianship to spiritual and character development. A Christian educator, he serves as an Aspire Godly Play instructor, using storytelling and reflective listening to support childrenâs inner life and spiritual imagination. He is furthering his theological training through a Masterâs in Christian Studies at the Alliance Bible Seminary and a postgraduate diploma in Christian Spiritual Direction at Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre, while also pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Direction with an institution in the United States. In his view, music education is most powerful when it is integrated into family, faith and daily life, helping children cultivate empathy, concentration, and resilient inner resources.
Beyond his work with children and families, Dr. Mok contributes to the broader educational and cultural landscape as a consultant, speaker and organiser. He serves as Music Education Consultant to the Hong Kong Homeschool Association, where he advises on how music can be meaningfully embedded into home-based curricula and family routines. He has led and curated international music study tours and camps in Europe, offering Hong Kong students and parents immersive encounters with the musical heritage of cities such as Vienna and other major cultural centres. In addition, he maintains active partnerships with international instrument and accessory brands as an endorsed artist, reflecting recognition of his standing within the professional guitar community.
Fluent in Cantonese, Putonghua and English, Mok moves easily between cultural and linguistic contexts in his teaching and performing. Colleagues and students often describe him as a patient and imaginative mentor who is able to translate high artistic ideals into accessible, playful experiences for children and adults alike.Whether on stage, in the studio, in the classroom or accompanying families on overseas musical journeys, Dr. Samuel Mok continues to shape the next generation of musicians and music lovers through a rare combination of artistic excellence, pedagogical depth and pastoral care.
